There are a multitude of artists in that investigate the fast fashion industry throughout there practice, in which I have explored a variety of figures. The artists below tackle the challenges on my market predominately though the medium of fabric, emphasising the severe problems the industry is accountable for.
Suzie Blake
Suzie Black depicts the feminist battle among the industry with her 3000 kilograms pile of T-shirts with feminist slogans, along with lingerie pieces and red dresses. I was particularly intrigued by the shape of the piece, formulating a mountain, considering the power within the industry. Likewise its label the Blood mountain, implements further what women's movement serve. Black's questioning of what is the role of feminism within such structures allows the viewer to consider the effects of females within the sweatshop movement.
I am really inspired how the piece presents beauty whilst portraying the abuse women are subjected to. The dark contrast is thought provoking and allows the viewer to reflect.
Libby Oliver
Soft shells is an expression of the consumerism system of today by Libby Oliver. The portrait series captures a different person with there entire wardrobe wrapped around them. Oliver eliminates the form of the human body by presenting the individuality of the figure through the clothing. I feel Oliver also highlights the social cue of clothing within the series, in which many are today so obsessed with, hence the reliance of the cheap and trending clothes produced.
The colourful montage of images gives the feeling of a sculpture to some extent, with the tall balancing clothes on the figures. Futhermore I am also really inspired by the paradox of the images in the way the clothes reveal and conceal who we are, and what clothing we are using.
Guerra de La Paz
Guerra da La Paz is a collaborative between Cuban based artists Alain Guerra and Neraldo de Le Paz. There works explore the expressive qualities of discarded textiles to demonstrate the excessive consumption and oppression of the fast fashion industry. It also questions are the masses of neglected clothing a symbol of misguided choice in our consumer driven society.
